The birth of depression
Although all of us are influenced by the past, some of us are overwhelmed by the Past time-body. When this happens, the world gets too much for us. We lose sight of any worthwhile purpose to our life. Nothing pleases us, and nothing delights us. We also feel alienation – from the world, from others and even from our own body.
These are all symptoms of mild depression. It happens because we’ve become time-heavy. We have too much past, and it becomes the filter through which we see the world. As a result, we lose any perspective because we no longer have direct experience of the world around us. Instead, we see the past; worse, we’re the past incarnate.
You could be walking through a beautiful park, but you’re not present – you’re thinking about your business problems. You could be playing with your child, but you’re only going through the physical motions – you’re worried about tomorrow’s appointment with the doctor.
Some cases of depression and addiction are the result of an ecstatic experience. The depressed person or addict finds life after the experience to be mundane and wants to have it again. As the illustration below shows, the ecstatic experience is an unacknowledged cause of depression and addiction. The other is trauma that wasn’t fully witnessed in that moment; that is, it was viewed, at best, only from the perspective of the body-centred self.
